Youth Football provides the next generation of players with the opportunity to experience full-contact American football in a structured and competitive environment. Running from May through to November during the senior kitted off-season, it offers a dedicated pathway for young athletes to develop their skills and understanding of the game.
The format is played 8v8, with no special teams, allowing for more involvement on both sides of the ball and a faster-paced style of play. It mirrors many of the core elements of the senior game while focusing on development, fundamentals, and game awareness.
Open to players aged 15–18 (players aged 18 must have been 17 for at least one day during the playing year), Youth Football welcomes all gendered athletes. It is a fully contact version of the sport, giving players a true introduction to American football and preparing them for progression into the senior-kitted level.
History
Origin
Founded in 2020 during the Covid-19 pandemic by veteran linebacker Niall Lyons, the Vipers Youth Team was created to give young people across the Northwest the opportunity to try a new and exciting sport. Despite challenging circumstances, the programme quickly grew and became a key pathway for developing future Vipers players.
Success in Youth Football
The 2022 season marked a major milestone for the programme, as the Vipers Youth team reached the playoffs for the first time in club history. Strong performances, including a win over the Belfast Trojans and a hard-fought draw against the South Dublin Panthers, secured their place among the top teams and highlighted the rapid progress of the squad.
International Success
In 2023, the Irish Wolfhounds launched an U19 National Team for American football, with several Vipers players earning selection to the squad. In a proud moment for the club, a Vipers player was named captain of the national team, while a coach from the club was also selected — a testament to the strength of the programme and its continued development.
National Championship Finalists
The 2024 season saw the Vipers Youth team reach new heights, finishing as National Championship finalists after an outstanding campaign. The season opened with a strong 14–6 victory over the Rebels, followed by a 19–8 win against the Panthers and a 30–0 performance over the Admirals.
A mid-season setback came against a merged Craigavon Cowboys/Westmeath Minotaurs side, but the Vipers responded in the best possible way. Meeting again in the playoffs, the Vipers delivered a statement performance, securing a 19–6 victory to avenge their earlier defeat and book their place in the National Championship game.
In the final, the Vipers faced a strong Belfast Knights side. Despite a determined effort, it proved a step too far on the day, with the Vipers finishing as runners-up — capping off a season that showcased the growth, resilience, and quality of the programme.
